Es un hecho que las mejores voces en el mundo de la música han desarrollado su carrera en Estados Unidos. Este país ha dado algunos de los mejores talentos. Entre ellos podemos encontrar la voz inigualable y espléndida de Tennessee Ernie Ford (Ernest Jennings Ford; Bristol, 13 de febrero de 1919 – Reston, 17 de octubre de 1991), cantante y presentador de televisión que alcanzó el éxito como intérprete de country & western, góspel y clásicos standards de la música pop.
Empezó su carrera como locutor de radio en la estación WOPI en su pueblo natal, pero en 1939 dejó la radio para estudiar música clásica y cantar en el Conservatorio de Música de Cincinnati, en Ohio. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, al igual que muchos otros artistas, deportistas, actores, etc, de la época, sirvió en las Fuerzas Armadas (esta es una de las razones del patriotismo genuino que había entonces en el mundo del espectáculo y que hoy, salvo excepciones, ha desaparecido); en concreto, sirvió en el U.S. Army Air Corps, destinado en Alabama y California. Después de la guerra, trabajó en las emisoras de radio de San Bernardino y Pasadena, en California.

Su carrera como cantante se inició a finales de los años 40 y entre 1955 y 1980 obtuvo éxitos tan apoteósicos como “Tennessee Border«, «Smokey Mountain Boogie» (ambos Top Ten) y su primer número uno, «Mule Train», «Shotgun Boogie«, su segundo número uno, seguidos por The Ballad of Davy Crockett , Sixteen tons, Give me your Word, Star Carol, Civil War Songs of the North Civil War Songs of the South, I Love to Tell the Story, Long Long Ago, Faith of Our Fathers Country Morning, y Keep Looking Back, entre otros muchos, que lo convirtieron en uno de los mejores y más populares cantantes.
Desde 1962 a 1965 trabajó en la KGO-TV en San Francisco, la emisión por cable de la televisión ABC, dirigiendo el programa The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show.
Su magnífica voz de barítono y un talento para cantar excepcional, lo convirtieron en un clásico de la música estadounidense y en uno de los que mejor supo recrear el western, los espirituales y las canciones de la Guerra Civil, tanto del Norte como del Sur.
Durante su carrera grabó 83 álbumes, vendió más de 60 millones de discos y obtuvo numerosos galardones, incluido el Grammy y la Presidential Medal of Freedom (Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad), entregada por el presidente Ronald Reagan en 1984. En 1990 fue introducido en el Country Music Hall of Fame.
